Take a Lead: Save the Earth

Take a Lead: Save the Earth

“The earth, the air, the land and the water are not an inheritance from our fore fathers but on loan from our children. So we have to handover to them, at least, as it was handed over to us.” Mahatma Gandhi
Earth our only home is in danger. As a result of global warming there is a rise in the earth’s temperature and oceans and atmosphere is heating up, glaciers are melting, hurricanes are occurring while there are certain areas that are facing drought condition.

There is no denial that we are going towards a massive devastation.

Though international treaty like Kyoto Protocol has come into action and nations worldwide have joined hands to commit to reduce greenhouse gases emissions that causes global warming, it is the responsibility of each and every person to make environmental issue a moral issue. Concepts like “Green cities” is most welcoming but what is needed is a green mind, a green thinking, a promotion of thought with actions. Not everybody can contribute everything, but everybody can contribute a little to make everything. The World Earth Day 2015 theme “It is our time to lead” says the same. That it is our time to lead and every single step counts.

In this context, an exemplary mention is the creation of a man-made forest in Assam, India by an individual called Jadav Payeng. Jadav who has been awarded a Padma Shri this year by the Indian government single-handedly planted and tended trees on a sandbar of the river Brahmaputra and turned it into a forest reserve. The forest called “Molai forest” encompasses an area of about 1,360 acres. Here an individual took a lead and created a difference.

Today on World Earth Day let us all take a pledge to contribute towards making this earth a more beautiful and a healthy place to live. Let us all incorporate the concept of reduce-reuse-recycle in our everyday life. From planting a tree to using recycling and biodegradable products, using only energy efficient electricity appliances to promote renewable technology resources, it is only through the choices we make that will ultimately create a difference.

Concluding in the words of Al Gore ex-vice president of USA and philanthropist “Each one of us is a cause of global warming, but each one of us can make choices to change that with the things we buy, the electricity we use, the cars we drive; we can make choices to bring our individual carbon emissions to zero. The solutions are in our hands, we just have to have the determination to make it happen.”
